Duane Elmer

For more than fifty years, Duane Elmer has crossed borders, languages, and cultures with one simple conviction: genuine relationships begin with humility.

An educator, author, speaker, and cross-cultural trainer, Duane has spent a lifetime helping people understand one another across cultural, organizational, and national boundaries. His work has taken him to more than 100 countries, where he has taught, trained, consulted, and learned alongside people from every corner of the globe.

Duane earned his PhD from Michigan State University and has devoted his career to preparing others for lives of meaningful service. After holding the Price-LeBar Chair of Educational Studies at Wheaton, he served for fifteen years as the G. W. Aldeen Chair of International Studies at Trinity International University. He retired as Distinguished Professor of Educational Studies (Emeritus) at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Earlier in his career, he was on the faculty of Missionary Internship in Farmington, Michigan.

His classroom has never been confined to a campus. Duane has served on the faculty of Durban Bible College in South Africa where he lived and ministered with his wife, Muriel. Additionally his training and consulting included Fortune 500 companies, humanitarian organizations, mission agencies, universities, churches, and schools. For several years he led peace and reconciliation initiatives in regions marked by conflict. With three other educators, he facilitated Teaching for Transformation workshops for more than twenty-five universities across Central and Eastern Europe as well as East Africa.

Duane authored several influential books on intercultural relationships, including Cross-Cultural Conflict, Cross-Cultural Connections, and Cross-Cultural Servanthood, a best-seller. His writing has helped shape the thinking of educators, missionaries, business leaders, and students around the world. He is also the co-author, with Muriel Elmer, of The Learning Cycle, a practical exploration of how people learn, grow, and develop character.

Whether speaking to a classroom, leading a workshop overseas, or writing from his home in the Chicago area, Duane brings together decades of scholarship, global experience, and genuine curiosity about people. Those who know him best appreciate not only his wisdom, but also his warmth, quiet humor, and gift for storytelling.
